Circa 1840 Stylish Regency mahogany sewing or work table. Also designed to be used as small writing or bedside table. The table stands on a six sided base with three curves legs. The center column is heavily carved with a beautiful intricate pattern. The top flips open and the compartmentalized drawer can be slid forward. Another drawer hangs beneath and is used for storage. The front is slightly curved inward, suggesting it’s multiple use, including a desk. There is a lock on the drawer, but no key. There are also four surviving lids that were used with the compartments. Dimensions: W24.25 D16 H29 Tables in good condition for its age. Please see pictures. The table has a few dings and scratches as expected from a piece from the 1840s. There appears to be an old repair to one of the back legs. The table leans slightly backwards, which easily be addressed with a shim. The Antique Work Table or ‘Work box’ was also known as a sewing box. It was an essential piece of antique furniture for the Victorian Lady, where she would keep her sewing and embroidery tools, fabric, needles and materials. The Antique sewing Work box often had a fabric lined drawer for wool and a drawer with lots of dividers for needles, cotton thread and pins. They will usually stand on elegant turned legs or a central pedestal with shaped base. The antique work box will also be finished on all sides so could be placed in the centre of a room and look desirable from all angles. The woods used in their construction was mainly figured Mahogany or more pretty timbers like burr Walnut or Rosewood. Antique Work boxes are beautiful 19th Century freestanding piece of antique furniture and make the perfect side table with the added benefit of storage provided. Due to its size and weight, this piece is local pick up only or I will work with your shipper. Some of my buyers have used uship or shiply for shipping.
