1970s Onyx Coffee Table by Muller's of Mexico
Title: Onyx Coffee Table.Maker: Muller Onix.Place: Mexico.Production date: circa 1970.Material: Onyx, Iron.Finishes: Onyx - shellac top coat, Base - antique brass finish.Description: Offered is an onyx coffee table, surface features orange, olive, brown and amber colors, supported by an iron frame wrapped in a laminate brass surround, maker label signed on verso. The material is slabbed from one solid boulder, then hand cut with a smooth bevel edge. The stone is sourced from the Southern Interior Region of Mexico. The table top is complemented with a period iron base (not original to the piece), features a scroll pattern with an H stretcher at bottom. Felt pads affixed to contact areas; e.g. support brackets.Overall measures: 47 W x 22 D x 15.5 H inches.Table top thickness: 2.5 inches. Onyx; .75 inches.Base measures: 24 W x 21.5 D x 14.5 H inches. Overall weight: 59.2 lb. (Table top - 44.8 lb., Base - 14.4 lb.). Included: Table top, base.About the maker: The Muller Onix store was famous back in the 1960’s until the 1980’s for selling beautiful onyx decorative items and furniture, including small and large chess sets, sculptures, platters, bowls, plates and tables in different sizes. The store was located in Mexico City and owned by American Guy Muller, who was also known as “Mr. Onyx”. His beautifully handcrafted Onyx tables are unique; you may still find them sometimes at Mexico City’s flea markets.
