Pennsylvania Walnut Tavern Table C.1770-90
Here's a nice early, possibly colonial walnut tavern table from Pennsylvania that dates from the last quarter of the 1700s. It still does its duty as an eating and drinking surface with ease, despite signs of much use. The hand-dovetailed drawers even show gnaw signs of mouse sanctuaries at some time in the distant past. It exists just as found, with no attempts at excessive cleaning or restoration. Even the two brass drawer pulls are original. Tables similar to this are more frequently found as "settles" which doubled as a fold up seating pieces without drawers. The top can be neatly taken off for moving by lifting it out of the rails. The frame has a stretcher all around and although quite worn in spots provides plenty of strength to the overall structure. While large, it is not particularly heavy. one person can lift it. The top measures a hefty 32-1/4" X 50-3/4". It is 30" tall. Four people could comfortably be seated at it. If you're going for that colonial look, now's the chance to have the real thing at no more than you'd pay for a too-perfect repop! Imagine all the real human drama it's witnessed in a couple centuries! People came to pubs to relax; air their grievances, politically pontificate about a new government, establish friendships, and then maybe fall asleep in a spilled tankard of ale. Its an exceptional piece that is not only unusual-looking but has great everyday functionality in the right 21st century setting! Would recommend picking it up here in VA, but will get you a quote for blanket-wrap shipment if you desire.
